RUKIGA: Musiimenta Chrispine Rwaboona the publicity secretary Rukiga Tea Growers Cooperative Society was elected Vice chairperson of the Uganda Women in Tea Chapter association and will deputize Julian Nyabuhara an another tea farmer in Kyamuhunga and former parliamentary candidate for Woman MP Bushenyi district
Women in tea chapter is an association started by women growing Tea in Uganda to fight for their rights mainly to put a policy/law to wholesomely fight for their inclusion in the industry.
The Women Tea farmers converged at Western Meridian Hotel on 20th March 2023 for half day engagement on their rights in all growing Tea districts in greater Western Uganda.
Rukiga district chairman Robert Mbabazi who was a chief guest urged women to unit, network and push their main agenda successfully.
The newly elected chairperson of Uganda Women Chapter in Tea Ms Julian Nyabuhara was happy to note that this was a great achievement going forward in achieving rights of women in Tea growing districts in great Western Uganda.
After formation of the Chapter and being sensitized on their rights they picked their placards with names of their districts and organizations marched through Bushenyi town emphasizing a point that they exist and their rights must be respected in the Tea sector.
Faith Nyamai trust Africa communications associate in charge of East Africa noted that their work is to empower chapters/associations in the communities to fight for their rights in Tea growing communities.
She noted that there is sexual harassment, little pay which must be fought by the Tea policy/law which the chapters will fight hard to ensure that its enacted in Uganda.
