KISORO: Potato prices in Kisoro district have surged over the past week, creating concern among consumers and vendors alike.
A brief survey conducted by our reporter reveals significant price hikes, with a sack of Kinigye potatoes now ranging from 200,000 to 250,000 shillings, compared to the previous price of 200,000 shillings. Similarly, a sack of gwangume potatoes has seen an increase from 150,000 to 200,000 shillings.
Moreover, the cost of smaller quantities has also risen sharply. Previously priced at 7,500 shillings, a small bucket of Kinigye potatoes now commands 10,000 shillings, while a bucket of gwangume potatoes, previously at 6,000 shillings, now stands at 9,000 shillings.
Vendors at Agatimba market in Kisoro Municipality attribute these soaring prices to a shortage in supply, expressing their concerns about the situation.

Pamela Musime, a chip seller at akamakara, illustrates the ripple effects of the rising potato prices. She notes that in response to the increased costs, she has been compelled to adjust her prices accordingly. A plate of chips, for instance, has climbed from 1,000 to 1,500 shillings, while the price of an omelet has surged from 2,000 to 2,500 shillings.
