RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District have apprehended a suspect for questioning regarding the death of 45-year-old Darius Rutaremwa in Buhunga Sub County.
The deceased, identified as Darius Rutaremwa, a resident of Nyamabare cell, Kibirizi parish, Buhunga Sub County, Rukungiri District, was allegedly murdered on an unspecified Friday night in Nyamabare cell, according to the police statement.
Police reveal that in September 2023, Kusasira Merab, the deceased’s mother, sold family land in collaboration with the deceased to Kabagambe, the buyer.
Police says transaction caused tension among family members, especially Muhanguzi Gerevazio, who began threatening the buyer, Thomas Twinamatsiko, the seller Merab, and the now-deceased Rutaremwa Darius.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, reports that this led to the arrest of Muhanguzi Gerevazio on Friday on charges of threatening violence at Buhunga Police Station.
Maate explains that Rutaremwa Darius, the deceased, was supposed to provide a statement at the police as a witness against Muhanguzi Gerevazio (his brother) but was tragically found murdered on the same day.
Police received information from Jackson Mwesigwa, the area chairperson of Nyamabare.
The crime scene was visited and documented, leading to the arrest of Nicholas Muhumuza, the son of Muhanguzi Gerevazio, while Gerivazio’s wife, Topista Baryomunsi, is currently evading arrest.
The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for postmortem, and investigations are ongoing.
