Police in Kisoro District are investigating the suspected suicide of a 45-year-old man who was found hanging inside his rented house following a domestic disagreement.

The deceased has been identified as Habiyakare Samuel, a Rwandan national and resident of Kagando Village, Gisozi Parish, Muramba Sub-county in Kisoro District.

According to police, Habiyakare allegedly developed a misunderstanding with his wife at their rented house in Kagando Trading Centre on the night of September 18.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said the deceased reportedly chased his wife out of the house before locking himself inside.

“On the morning of September 19, 2026, the deceased was found dead inside his rented house, hanging using a piece of cloth,” Tumushime said in a statement issued on Sunday.

Tumushime said police were concerned about the increasing cases of suspected suicide in the Kigezi region, noting that Kisoro alone had registered about three such cases in September.

He urged people facing stress, depression, financial difficulties or family-related challenges to seek help early rather than resorting to suicide.

Police said they were working with health teams, religious leaders, civil society organisations and local leaders to sensitise communities about mental health and suicide prevention.
