RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly murdering his own 65-year-old biological father under unknown circumstances.
The deceased has been identified as John Mbanganisa, a resident of Kateramo Village, Kikongi Parish, Bwambara Sub County in Rukungiri District, according to the statement released by the police.
The police statement reveals that the deceased, John Mbanganisa, was allegedly murdered by Justus Byamukama, a 28-year-old resident of Kateramo Village, Kikongi Parish, Bwambara Sub County in Rukungiri District, at 9:00 PM on Monday evening.
Allegedly, while the deceased was inside the house with his grandchildren, Justus Byamukama, the suspect, came and knocked on his father’s door. Niwahereza Evans, a 12-year-old child, opened the door for him, and he entered.
Upon entering, the suspect began threatening his father, and the deceased cautioned him not to disturb him, advising him to go and sleep where he had been staying in Rwenshama.
The suspect became violent, picked up a walking stick, started hitting the deceased, grabbed his neck, and threw him onto the bed.
The young children immediately raised the alarm to rescue their grandfather. Kamani Edson, a neighbor, and others responded to the commotion and witnessed the suspect leaving the scene and heading towards Kateramo trading center.
Kamani alerted the defense secretary, Muyambi Protazi, who traced and apprehended the suspect. Bikurungu Police were then alerted and arrived promptly to re-arrest the suspect and take him into police custody.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police Spokesperson, stated that a murder case has been registered at Bikurungu Police station under SD Reference 02/18/07/2023.
Maate further stated that a team comprising homicide investigators, criminal investigation officers, and scene of crime officers visited and documented the crime scene. Statements were also recorded from relevant witnesses, and the suspect was apprehended.
The body of the deceased was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examination.
