Catholic Church Mourns the Loss of Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga

MBARARA – The Catholic community in Southwestern Uganda and Mbarara Archdiocese are grieving the loss of Archbishop Emeritus His Grace Paul Kamuza Bakyenga.

The esteemed archbishop passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya in Kampala.

Fr. Mukasa Balikudembe, the Mbarara Diocesan Chancellor, released a statement announcing that burial arrangements will be communicated soon. He called upon the Catholic community to pray for the peaceful repose of Archbishop Bakyenga’s soul.

In June of this year, during his pastoral visit to West Ankole Diocese, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda, paid a courtesy visit to Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga at the residence of the Vicar General in Bushenyi.

During their meeting, Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga shared valuable insights on the virtues of good leadership with Archbishop Kaziimba.

“On my Pastoral Visit to West Ankole Diocese, I had the privilege of paying a courtesy visit to my brother Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga of Mbarara Archdiocese at the residence of the Vicar General in Bushenyi. Archbishop Bakyenga graciously imparted to me his wisdom on the virtues of good leadership,” said Archbishop Kaziimba.

Rt. Maj. Jessica Alupo, the Vice President of Uganda, expressed her deep sorrow and condolences for Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga, describing him as God’s humble servant who had celebrated 50 years of Priesthood just last year.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Archbishop Paul Bakyenga, God’s humble servant, who celebrated 50 years of Priesthood only last year. I extend my condolences to his family, the Catholic Church, all Christians, and the people of Uganda. May God grant his soul eternal rest,” stated Vice President Alupo in her eulogy.

Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, emphasized that Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga’s legacy would be cherished as a unifying force and recognized his unwavering dedication to his calling and his significant contributions to the country’s development.

Expressing her condolences, Speaker Among said, “It is with deep pain that I received the news of the passing of Archbishop Emeritus of Mbarara Archdiocese, His Grace Paul Bakyenga. We will hold onto his legacy as a unifying force, dedicated to his calling and his immense contribution to the development of the country. My sincere condolences go out to the Uganda Episcopal Conference, the Catholic fraternity, the people of Mbarara Archdiocese, and all his loved ones. May the Lord, whom he served diligently, grant his soul eternal rest.”

Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, remembered Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga as a spiritual father, a cheerleader, and a counselor to many Ugandans. He acknowledged the archbishop’s unique ability to connect with the congregation through his preaching.

Tayebwa shared, “With the passing of His Grace Paul Bakyenga this morning, sadness has once again engulfed us. He has been my spiritual father, a cheerleader, and a counselor to many of us. His Grace was a remarkable preacher whose messages deeply resonated with the congregation. Personally, he encouraged me as a leader to always find time to communicate with God in a quiet place daily and embark on a journey of spiritual self-discovery. This advice has been invaluable in helping me discover my vocation and purpose. My condolences go to His Grace Lambert, Archbishop of Mbarara, his personal friend President Kaguta Museveni, his family, AMDA, MEPA community, and all people of God. Your Grace, I pray that you intercede for us, your children, before the Lord in heaven.”

Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga was born on June 30, 1944, in Bumbaire Village, Igara Sub- County, in present-day Bushenyi District, Western Region, Uganda. He passed away at the age of 79.
