Police Probes Death of Mukiga Peasant in Kanungu Following Domestic Violence Altercation

KANUNGU- Police in Kanungu District are currently investigating the death of Begumanya Phenahansi (57), a Mukiga by tribe, a peasant, and a resident of Biizi village, Southern Ward, Rutenga Town Council in Kanungu District.

 

According to a police statement, Mugenyi Ezra (45), also a peasant and resident of Biizi village, Southern Ward, Rutenga Town Council in Kanungu District, reported the case as a murder by assault.

It is alleged that on the 13th of June 2023, at approximately 8:00 PM, the deceased engaged in a domestic violence incident with his wife, Twongeirwe Charity, a 52-year-old adult. During the altercation, their biological son, Ndeeya, aged 18 and residing at the same address, reportedly picked up a heavy stick and struck his father three times on the head, causing multiple injuries.

Initially, the victim received treatment at home from family members, without reporting the incident to the police. However, on the 26th of June 2023, at around 9:00 PM, the victim’s condition worsened, and he was subsequently taken to Kisiizi Hospital in Rukungiri District.

According to the police statement, the deceased passed away on Wednesday, the 28th of June 2023, at approximately 02:00 AM, while still in the same hospital. The body has been transported back home for a proper burial.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, reports that a team of detectives led by D/Aip Tumusabe Francis, District SOCO Kanungu, and No. 44956 Cpl Okochii, the officer-in-charge of Rutenga police post, visited the crime scene.

Maate further states that statements from relevant witnesses have been obtained and that the body was examined at home using PF48A and PF48C forms.

The suspects involved in the incident are still at large.
