Salim Tana Mukankwaya, who contested the Kisoro District Woman MP seat in the 2024 by-election on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket but lost, has been appointed to the party’s Election Management Committee (EMC).
Mukankwaya was defeated by Grace Ngabirano Akifeza, an independent candidate aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), securing 903 votes in the tightly contested race.
Her appointment was announced through an official NUP poster that read: “Congratulations to you for being appointed NUP Election Management Committee Publicity! We welcome you to this crucial role. We look forward to your contributions and leadership.”
Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Tana expressed her gratitude, writing: “I’m deeply honoured to be appointed as the new Publicity Secretary for the EMC. Thank you to the NUP leadership for entrusting me with this responsibility. I look forward to serving with dedication and amplifying our message of change and unity.”
The 2024 by-election was not her first attempt at elective office. At around 29 years old, she had previously contested for the Kisoro Municipality MP seat in 2021, but was unsuccessful.
