KAMPALA: The Former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, on Friday officially announced the formation of a new political entity, the Democratic Alliance (DA).
This development follows his fallout with the National Unity Platform (NUP), a party he co-founded ahead of the 2021 general elections.
Mpuuga made the announcement during an event in Kampala, where he outlined the vision and objectives of the Democratic Alliance.
“This afternoon, we took the first steps to redirect the course of the struggle to liberate our motherland. Over the past four years, our struggle was derailed as our leaders chose pettiness over the real issues that touch on the democratic governance of our country. Enough time has been wasted. We are choosing to take forward the quest for change and good governance,” Mpuuga declared.
Mpuuga criticized the leading opposition political party, asserting that it was in a “deep slumber” and questioning how it lost its focus.
“We are going to further engage with all change-seeking forces to work together towards a unified front that will ultimately deliver the change we all desire,” he added.
The Democratic Alliance is expected to register as a political party once it meets the requirements set by the Electoral Commission.
According to the Electoral commission guidelines, Mpuuga must provide Two copies of the party’s constitution, duly signed by authorized officers and a list of at least 50 members from two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, ensuring members are either ordinarily resident or registered voters in their respective districts.
He will also be required to present a full description of the party’s identifying symbols, slogans, and colors, if applicable and make a Payment of a registration fee of UGX 250,000 (two hundred fifty thousand Ugandan shillings).
Mpuuga’s announcement marks a significant shift in Uganda’s political landscape as the Democratic Alliance seeks to rally support for its vision of change and good governance.
