The Ndorwa West County MP Eliab Eliab Naturinda Mporera has cautioned people against betraying their friends and associates for material gain, urging couples to build marriages on mutual respect, trust and perseverance.
Naturinda made the remarks on Saturday evening while attending the wedding reception of Mathias Akansasira and Promise Natukunda, both from Butanda Sub-county, Kabale District. The reception was held at Brazin Forest Resort in Kabale Municipality.
MP Naturinda said genuine friendship requires respect and loyalty, adding that Akansasira’s association with Christ the King SACCO demonstrated his ability to maintain meaningful relationships.
He urged the newlyweds to respect each other, work together and remain committed to their marriage despite challenges.
“Marriage requires people to work together and endure challenges as they pursue the progress of their family,” Naturinda said.
He also commended Finance Minister Henry Musasizi for intervening in the stalled Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi-Kisoro-Mgahinga road project.
Minister Musasizi on Friday chaired a high-level meeting involving ministers, Kigezi MPs, African Development Bank (AfDB) officials, district leaders, technical experts and private-sector representatives to assess the progress of the project.
The meeting established that although government had largely fulfilled its contractual obligations, including financing commitments, acquisition of the right of way and compensation of project-affected persons, construction had stalled.
Officials said about 80 per cent of land compensation had been completed, but physical progress stood at only 2.13 per cent against the planned 37.15 per cent. Construction works have been suspended since June 1, 2026.
The meeting directed the Ministry of Works and Transport to take immediate steps to restore progress on the project, while the Attorney General was tasked with providing urgent legal guidance on issues surrounding the contract.
Government also resolved to explore all contractual options, including terminating the contract if the contractor fails to return to site. A joint field inspection involving key stakeholders will also be conducted to determine the way forward.
Kigezi leaders have raised concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, warning that the approaching rainy season could further affect transport, tourism, trade and livelihoods in the region.
Minister Musasizi warned that government could terminate the contract if the contractor fails to resume works, but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the strategic road project.
He also appealed to regional leaders to help resolve outstanding right-of-way issues and urged project-affected persons who have already received compensation not to reoccupy the road corridor.
The Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi-Kisoro-Mgahinga road is expected to improve connectivity in Kigezi, boost tourism to Lake Bunyonyi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and facilitate trade with neighbouring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
