The Government of Uganda is set to construct a UGX 72 billion gravity water flow scheme in Ndorwa County East, Kabale District. The project aims to tap running water from the top of Ndorwa East hills and Lake Bunyonyi to address the persistent water shortages in the region.
According to Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, the Member of Parliament for Ndorwa East County, the government has allocated UGX 30 billion in the 2025/2026 financial year for the initial phase of the project.
Niwagaba explained that the gravity water scheme is intended to resolve the longstanding water crisis affecting several communities in the constituency. He noted that a modern water reservoir tank will be constructed in Bugarama Parish, Buhara Sub-county, to serve areas including Bugarama, Kahama, Kanjobe, and Kigatta in Kyanamira Sub-county.
Another reservoir will be built at Omukagaana to serve the communities of Omukagaana, Kavu, Rurema, Kamuronko, Birambo, Burambira, and Nyanja.
The MP added that feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments have already been completed, and several companies have expressed interest in the project. He is optimistic that the construction works will commence by October.

Maziba Sub-county Chairperson, Onesmus Mutungi, welcomed the development, saying residents in the hilly areas have endured long treks to access clean water from the slopes.
He said the project is long overdue, despite repeated appeals to various government offices over the years.
