The Government of Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to harnessing the potential of young people as a key driver of national development, as preparations gather pace for the 4th Annual National Labour Convention and Expo 2026.

The two-day high-level event is scheduled for April 15–16 at the Kampala Serena Hotel under the theme: “Unlocking the Potential of Uganda’s Youth Labour Force: Advancing Productivity and Expanding Opportunities for Decent Work.”

The convention will bring together stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, and development partners to shape strategies aimed at transforming Uganda’s labour market. Organisers say the gathering reflects a forward-looking approach to leveraging the country’s youthful population for economic growth.

With more than 75 percent of Uganda’s population under the age of 30, officials believe the country is well positioned to turn its demographic advantage into sustained development through targeted investments in skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Amongi Betty Ongom (MP), acknowledge persistent challenges, including youth unemployment and the dominance of informal employment.

However, she noted that ongoing investments in skills development, digital transformation, and enterprise support are beginning to yield positive results.

The upcoming convention will focus on scaling these interventions, strengthening partnerships, and addressing barriers that limit access to decent work, particularly for young people.

The event is expected to be officiated by the Vice President of Uganda as chief guest and will attract senior government leaders, cabinet ministers, and private sector representatives, underscoring a coordinated national effort to tackle employment challenges.

As Uganda advances its agenda for inclusive and sustainable growth, the convention is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping policies and solutions that empower youth and strengthen the country’s labour force.

Proceedings will be broadcast live, allowing members of the public to follow discussions and contribute to the national conversation on the future of work.
