Fresh fighting has erupted in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo after coalition forces linked to the Kinshasa government reportedly launched widespread attacks on civilian-populated areas on Tuesday morning.
According to a statement released by Lawrence Kanyuka, the Communications Officer for the March 23 Movement, the offensive began at around 6:45 AM, with intense bombardments involving combat drones targeting the densely populated Mikenke area in the highlands of Minembwe.
The strikes, which reportedly continued for hours, are said to have caused casualties, destroyed homes, and wiped out livestock, leaving many families displaced and in distress.
Minutes later, at approximately 6:50 AM, the attacks reportedly spread to the localities of Lumbishi, Katale, and Tushunguti in Kalehe territory, where more civilian communities were affected.
Kanyuka accused government-aligned forces of deliberately targeting civilians, describing the attacks as a violation of international humanitarian law.
He added that the Alliance Fleuve Congo in partnership with M23 had raised concern over what it termed as “grave crimes” against innocent populations.
The rebel alliance reaffirmed its stance to defend civilians, stating it remains prepared to take necessary measures to protect communities amid the escalating violence.
