KABALE: Farmers in Kabale Municipality have been urged to adopt kitchen gardens as a strategy to fight malnutrition and improve household nutrition.
The call was made on Friday by Barnabas Tugumisirize, the Project Manager of the Kabale Municipality Development Foundation (KMDF), during a meeting with members of the Kirigime Local Food Association at Kirigime Guest House. The association focuses on vegetable growing.
The meeting was organized by KMDF in collaboration with Slow Food Uganda and the Rubanda District Consortium of Smallholder Farmers Groups.
Tugumisirize highlighted that the Kigezi region is grappling with malnutrition, particularly among children suffering from stunted growth. He encouraged farmers to utilize kitchen gardens to grow nutrient-rich vegetables, especially given the region’s limited land availability.
“Kitchen gardens can also help parents save money that would otherwise be spent on buying such food items from the market,” he noted.
Tugumisirize also urged residents to conserve the environment by planting indigenous trees to prevent landslides, which are common during the rainy season.

Speaking at the same event, Kabale District Assistant Resident Commissioner (RDC), Christmas Turyomurugyendo, advised farmers to minimize unnecessary expenditures and focus on investing in profitable ventures.
Turyomurugyendo also discouraged the use of chemical fertilizers, advocating for organic manure to maintain soil fertility and prevent soil degradation.
