As Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, has called on journalists to uphold professionalism and ethical reporting to strengthen public trust and maintain the integrity of the media.
World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3, is a time to reflect on the state of press freedom across the globe and to honor journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and accountability.
This year’s national theme, “Defending the Truth in the Age of Polarisation and Distrust,” underscores the urgent need for accurate, fair, and independent journalism. While addressing the media, Maate commended journalists for their significant contributions to society and urged them to continue upholding professional and ethical standards in their work.
He warned that unbalanced or inaccurate reporting can tarnish reputations, defame individuals, and adversely affect lives and future opportunities.
Maate also appealed to journalism students and interns to prioritize acquiring proper academic and professional training, stressing that journalism is a discipline that requires skill, knowledge, and continuous learning.
He urged journalists to resist accepting bribes from politicians seeking to influence media content. He cautioned that such unethical practices not only compromise journalistic integrity but also mislead the public and erode trust in the media.
