Two people have been confirmed dead after two massive rocks rolled down a hillside and crashed into their home in Kogorogoro Village, Mutungo Parish, Nyakishana Sub-county, Buhweju District.

The deceased have been identified as husband and wife, Gumisiriza Deus, 40, and Nyamwiza Evalyne. The tragic incident occurred at about midnight on February 22, 2026.

The Regional Police Public Relations Officer for Greater Bushenyi, SP Tayebwa Apollo, confirmed the incident, stating that officers responded promptly but found the couple already dead at the scene.

According to SP Tayebwa, preliminary findings indicate that earth tremors in the area triggered the movement of two large stones from a nearby hill.

“The rocks rolled down into the valley and tore through the roof of the couple’s semi-permanent house, fatally injuring them as they slept. Fortunately, the couple’s six children, who were also inside the house at the time, escaped unhurt”.

He said “Further investigations revealed that the rocks had previously been disturbed due to digging activities around them, leaving them unstable and vulnerable to movement during the tremors”.

He revealed that the bodies were later handed over to relatives for burial as investigations continue.

“Police extended condolences to the bereaved family and cautioned residents, particularly those living in hilly and mountainous areas, against destabilising large rocks. I urge the public to remain vigilant during periods of earth tremors and heavy rains to prevent similar tragedies”.
