More than 200 people have been registered in the Southern Division of Kabale Municipality over the past three days, as part of the ongoing mass enrollment and renewal of national identity cards.
The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) launched the nationwide exercise on May 27, 2025. The free process, targeting Ugandans aged 16 and above, is expected to run for six to ten months across all districts.
Annet Korugyendo, the team leader in the Southern Division, reported being overwhelmed by the high turnout. She said some individuals had to be turned away at the end of the day due to long queues.
Korugyendo also noted that many applicants were unfamiliar with the official guidelines, especially those seeking replacements for lost or expired IDs but arriving without the necessary documentation.
“Some people have also been impatient, demanding quick service, even though the registration process takes around 10 minutes per person,” she added.
Moreen Ajurira, a registration assistant, cited frequent power outages as a major disruption to operations and service delivery.
Her colleague, Ronald Kakuru, highlighted challenges with form errors, such as mismatched names and applicants entering their date of birth instead of the ID’s expiry date.
