The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Second Division on Friday edged out Rwanda’s Defence Force (RDF) Fifth Division with a 4–3 victory in a penalty shootout during a friendly football match held at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo District.
The event, which drew local residents, military personnel, and dignitaries from both nations, served as a powerful symbol of regional cooperation and unity. More than just a game, the match was aimed at building trust, deepening collaboration, and strengthening the longstanding ties between Uganda and Rwanda.
Speaking at the event, senior military commanders from both divisions emphasized the importance of such interactions beyond traditional military cooperation.
“This is more than just a game. It reflects our close interactions and stands as a gesture of friendship, a symbol of our shared commitment to peace and regional cooperation,” said Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2nd Division.
Brig Gen Pascal Muhizi, Commander of the RDF 5th Division, echoed the sentiment, saying, “We may serve different nations, but events like this remind us that we share common goals and values. Through unity and open engagement, we can continue to foster a stable and secure region.”
The Chief Guest, Lt Gen (Rtd) Jim Owoyesigire, former Commander of Uganda’s Air Forces, noted that the friendship between the two countries is rooted in a mutual desire for freedom, peace, and democracy.
He expressed gratitude to the Presidents of both countries, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda and H.E. Paul Kagame of Rwanda as well as to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces and the RDF Chief of Defence Staff for supporting such initiatives.
The friendly match is part of a broader initiative by the two defence forces to strengthen bilateral relations through dialogue, joint activities, and community engagement.
As part of the day’s program, participants also took part in a route march through Ntungamo Town and planted trees as a symbol of peace and sustainability.
Hon. Kamateneti Bata, Member of Parliament for Ntungamo District, welcomed the event, noting that such interactions bring a sense of peace and unity to a border region historically marked by both challenges and cooperation.
