KABALE – The Maziba Sub-county Chief and Accountant in Kabale District have been arrested for misappropriating over 25 Million shillings meant for road rehabilitation during the 2020/2021 financial year.

The suspects, Vianey Besigomwe and James Magezi, were arrested on Thursday last week and are currently at Kabale Central Police station. Their arrest was orchestrated by Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Godfrey Nyakahuma after failing to account for the missing funds.

The missing funds were designated for crucial road projects, including the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Ikona-Omuncuro Primary School-Omuncuro Trading Center road, Kagona road, Nyanja Trading Center-Kiziba A to Kiziba B road, Nyanja-Kambibi-Rwamijina road, Kaburasi, Kanoni, Remihanga road, and Iziniro-Omukashenyi road.

RDC Nyakahuma took decisive action after the duo failed to account for the allocated funds after reports from whistleblowers exposed a concerning trend, revealing that since 2020, no road in Maziba sub-county had undergone rehabilitation, despite the continuous influx of funds.

Nyakahuma emphasized that Maziba sub-county consistently submitted performance reports, affirming the completion of road projects and effective utilization of funds from the 2020/2021 financial year. These deceptive reports prompted the RDC to take the necessary steps in apprehending Besigomwe and Magezi.

Nyakahuma also disclosed that authorities are actively pursuing Loyce Asiimwe, the former Sub-county Chief, who currently serves as the Kabale Clerk to the Council. Asiimwe is currently on the run, wanted for questioning in connection with the same financial mismanagement case.
