KABALE – The Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Honorable Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira on Sunday, urged parents to embrace the use of positive language when interacting with their children in order to nurture them into responsible citizens.
Honorable Atwakiire was the thanksgiving ceremony for Mr. Dickens Murela, a resident of Kavu in Maziba sub-county, Kabale District, held at Bikomero Church of Uganda, Birambo parish in Kamuronko Archdeaconry.
Honorable Atwakiire emphasized the pivotal role parents play in guiding and molding their children into responsible and respectful citizens. She highlighted the profound impact that words have on children’s behavior and attitude, underscoring the need for positivity in daily interactions.
According to her, children are highly impressionable, and the words used by elders can either uplift them or erode their self-esteem.
“It is the responsibility of parents to choose words that are positive and encouraging,” stated Honorable Atwakiire.
She urged parents to avoid using harsh or derogatory language that could negatively affect their children’s self-esteem and confidence.
“Positive words have the ability to boost children’s self-esteem and contribute to the development of a positive self-image”. She said.
Honorable Atwakiire emphasized the importance of Parents leading by example in parenting.
“Children learn communication skills from their parents, and using polite and positive words in interactions will instill values of respect and kindness in them”. She added.
Discipline.
Honorable Atwakiire explained that positive words serve not only to correct behavior but also to teach the value of good conduct. She stressed that discipline is more than just punishment; it involves understanding and guiding children towards appropriate behavior.
“There might be moments when parents lose patience and resort to negative words. However, apologizing and explaining to children why certain words are inappropriate, teaches them the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions and apologizing when wrong”. She noted.
Honorable Atwakiire also graced church services at Kabanyonyi Tabernacle Church in Kafunjo Parish, Buhara Sub County, Kabale district, and Kamunyungwire Church of Uganda in Kafunjo parish, Kamuronko Archdeaconry, Kyanamira sub-county of Kabale District.
