KATAKWI: A total of 1,325 residents of Adiit Village, Aparisia Parish, Katakwi Sub-County in Katakwi District are grappling with a severe water shortage due to limited water sources in the area.

Hon. Rose Mary Akurut, the District Councilor representing Katakwi Town Council and Katakwi Sub-County, revealed in a report submitted by the LC1 Chairperson of Adiit Village that the entire population of 1,325 people, drawn from 107 households, relies on a single borehole.

Akurut expressed concern that the dire water situation exacerbates gender-based violence in the area, particularly during the dry season, as women and other water users are forced to congregate at the borehole and endure long waits.

She warned that the prolonged delay in addressing the water shortage might expose residents to waterborne diseases due to the deteriorating condition of the borehole.

While submitting the report to the District Water Department on Monday, December 2, 2024, Akurut called for urgent intervention, requesting the construction of an additional borehole to reduce the burden on residents who are forced to walk long distances in search of water.

Lydia Eseza Apio, a representative of the District Water Office, acknowledged the report and emphasized that her office is committed to addressing community water demands.

She explained that once a formal request is submitted by the community, the water office, in collaboration with development partners, will take action to ensure access to clean and safe water.
