Police in Rukiga District are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 35-year-old man, identified as Patrick Ndyamugumya, a resident of Kigara Cell, Kigara Parish, Kamwezi Sub-county.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. along the Rushebeya–Mparo murram road on Wednesday.
Police says that the vehicle involved was part of a convoy escorting a National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate who had just been nominated and was heading to Mparo for a campaign launch.
Police said that when the convoy reached Kitwe Cell, the door of the vehicle in which Ndyamugumya was seated reportedly opened suddenly, causing him to fall onto the road. The rear tyres of the vehicle ran over his chest, killing him instantly.
Police visited and documented the scene before taking the body to Mparo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. The body has since been handed over to the family for burial.
Meanwhile, the vehicle and its driver are still on the run as investigations continue.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said inquiries are ongoing.
