NTUNGAMO: Authorities in Ntungamo District have officially launched renovation works worth Shs1.5 billion at Itojo Hospital, located in Itojo Sub-county.
The refurbishment will be carried out by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade.
Speaking at the launch event on Tuesday, Ntungamo District Chairperson Sam Muchunguzi Rwakigooba emphasized that the project reflects the district’s dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
He noted that the renovations, alongside planned facility expansions, are expected to significantly improve service delivery for residents.
“Renovating existing structures and constructing new ones will go a long way in improving service delivery to our people,” Rwakigooba said.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner Rosemary Atuhaire applauded the Ministry of Health for funding the project and expressed confidence in the UPDF’s capability to deliver quality results within the stipulated timeline.
Itojo Sub-county District Councillor Denis Savimbi Muhumuza welcomed the development, highlighting that the hospital, which was established in the early 1970s, has long required urgent renovation.
Dr. Innocent Twesiime, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, described the project as timely and appealed to the government to provide further resources to address the hospital’s other critical needs.
Representing the Ministry of Health, Alfred Nabaasa noted that the renovations will be implemented in phases, with initial focus placed on the hospital’s most critical and sensitive areas.
Ntungamo District Health Officer Dr. Amon Bahati added that, beyond infrastructure improvements, the district is also advocating for increased staffing at the hospital to address existing human resource gaps and improve healthcare delivery.
Gerald Niwagaba, the Senior Assistant Secretary representing the Chief Administrative Officer, urged all stakeholders including local leaders, hospital management, and contractors to collaborate closely to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
The renovation works will include extensive repairs to water and sanitation systems, full upgrades to the male and pediatric wards, enhancements to the main operating theatre, and the installation of a new standby generator.
