KASESE: More than 65 households in Kabunga village, Karusandara sub-county, Kasese district, remain displaced following last Sunday’s devastating floods caused by the overflowing of River Mubuku.

Several affected families are now sheltering with neighbors or relatives after the floodwaters swept through their homes.

The flooding was triggered by heavy rains that pounded the mountainous parts of Kasese on Sunday evening. As a result, River Mubuku burst its banks, washing debris into Karusandara sub-county and leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

On Tuesday, our reporter visited Kabunga village and spoke with Marion Mbambu, a mother of two who was among those displaced. Mbambu expressed her distress, revealing that she, her children, and 20 other people are currently crammed into a four-room house owned by her in-law.

He urged the government to urgently de-silt the confluence where Rivers Mubuku, Kabaka, and Nkoko meet, to prevent future disasters.

Two other residents, Harriet Mbabazi (36) and Maritha Singeyuvu (39), also suffered significant losses. Their homes and crop gardens were destroyed by the floods, and they are now struggling to raise funds to rent rooms in a nearby trading center.

Stephen Hafasha, the Chairperson of Kabunga village, confirmed that all 65 affected households also lost their crop gardens to the floods.

He lamented that a village once considered a food basket for the district may now become one in dire need of food aid.
