KAMPALA – As the nation gears up for its 61st Independence Day, members of the National Unity Platform Party are rallying in significant numbers to pray for comrades who lost their lives or were abducted by the ruling National Resistance Movement Party.
Tomorrow’s independence celebrations in Kitgum District, Acholi sub-region, will feature President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the chief guest.
In a statement shared on Twitter, National Unity Platform Party Principal, Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi, announced that NUP members will convene at their Kamwokya offices to pray for those who fell victim to the regime – those killed, abducted, and still missing, as well as those unlawfully detained.
Kyagulanyi emphasized that, given the current state, there is nothing to truly celebrate about independence, as the country is far from being truly independent. He argued that independence merely marked a shift from white colonialists to black colonialists who, according to him, have perpetuated even greater injustices.
“While Museveni and his associates revel in celebrating nearly forty years of exploiting our nation, we will stand united with the families of the repressed victims to honor their memories—the deceased, the disappeared, and the detained,” Kyagulanyi stated.
He further revealed that a special session would be dedicated to the missing journalist Sesanga Batte, recently abducted by regime operatives and still unaccounted for.
