RUKUNGIRI: Lack of basic knowledge in record-keeping has been identified as a significant challenge hindering farmers in Rukungiri District from effectively managing their farming operations.

This issue came to light on Friday at the conclusion of a three-day Farmers Business Game workshop held at Heritage Hotel in Rukungiri Municipality. The workshop was organized by the Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union Limited (UCSCU) in collaboration with the German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation (GSIC).

Bony Asiimwe, a Financial Education Adviser from GSIC, highlighted that many farmers lack essential skills in record-keeping, business planning, and joining farmer associations. She emphasized that the training provided during the workshop would empower farmers to manage their operations more efficiently and view farming as a business.

Andrew Mugumya from UCSCU expressed optimism that the participants would serve as role models in their communities and help strengthen the SACCO by sharing the knowledge they gained with fellow farmers. Canon Twirire Yosia, Chairperson of Buyanja SACCO, underscored the need for farmers to adopt a business-oriented approach to farming. He encouraged SACCO members to develop business plans to achieve their farming goals and suggested that loans could help bridge gaps in their operations.

Olive Nayebare, General Manager of Buyanja SACCO, explained that the training was designed to equip farmers with the necessary skills in record-keeping, calculating earnings and expenses, and improving their overall farming operations. She also urged the public to open accounts with Buyanja SACCO to access services such as loans for agriculture, school fees, Bodaboda, and home improvement.
