Kasyaba made these remarks on Sunday during a thanksgiving ceremony at Mugyera Catholic Church in Habuhutu Town Council, Rubanda District. His comments were a response to a speech by former Rubanda District Youth Councilor, Ronald Niwagaba, who had called on the people of Greater Bufundi Subcounty to support Julius Buzaale for the LC.5 Chairperson seat in the 2026 elections because Buzaale hails from Bufundi.

“We have been supporting candidates from Muko Subcounty. It’s now time to support one of our own from Bufundi,” Niwagaba said.

However, Kasyaba criticized the youth leader for promoting identity politics, which he described as divisive.

“When you are running for LC.5 Chairperson, you should seek support from all the people of the district, not just from the subcounty where you were born,” Kasyaba said. “If you only want people from one subcounty to vote for you, then you should run for LC.3 Chairperson instead.”

Kasyaba further explained that encouraging people to vote based on village or subcounty origins leads to divisions and suggests that such politicians do not need support from other areas, which ultimately fosters disunity.

He emphasized that identity politics is often employed by candidates who lack substantial manifestos.

“If you ask people to vote based on geography, religion, tribes, or other forms of identity, you not only create divisions but also undermine the democratic process of electing capable leaders, thereby sabotaging development,” Bamunyangira said.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Andrew Tumukurate from Kishanje Catholic Parish urged voters to elect result-oriented leaders ahead of the 2025/2026 elections. He advised voters to carefully evaluate candidates, paying attention to both their words and actions in the community before making their choice.
