Police in Rubirizi District have intensified enforcement of traffic laws targeting reckless motorcyclists, citing road safety risks during the school opening period.
The Rubirizi District Traffic Officer, Richard Twebaze, said the operation focuses on curbing dangerous practices such as drug abuse, drink-driving, over-speeding, distracted riding, especially using mobile phones while riding and general disregard for traffic regulations.
He noted that these behaviors remain the leading causes of motorcycle-related accidents in the district.
According to police records, 14 road accidents have been registered since the beginning of this year, a significant reduction from the 74 accidents recorded in 2025.
While acknowledging the improvement, Twebaze cautioned that the situation remains worrying and requires sustained discipline among riders.
He stressed that enforcement alone is not enough and called on motorcyclists to change their attitudes toward road use by obeying traffic laws and abandoning risky habits that endanger their lives and those of other road users.
Twebaze also appealed to passengers and the wider community to take an active role in promoting road safety. He urged residents to report reckless riders and support police efforts by acting as responsible witnesses and “road safety ambassadors.”
Police warned that any motorcyclists found violating traffic laws will face strict penalties, emphasizing that preventing road accidents is a shared responsibility.
Twebaze reiterated the need for all riders to prioritize safety, especially during peak traffic periods, to reduce accidents and save lives.
