Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the gruesome killing of a six-year-old boy, Stephen Ayebare, a pupil at Rubanga Primary School and resident of Kishonga Upper Cell, Rubanga North, Buyanja Sub-county.

Ayebare was allegedly hacked to death on Monday September 1, 2025, by his cousin, 32-year-old Anthony Begumisa, under unclear circumstances. During the incident, Begumisa also critically injured his brother, Ahimbisibwe Laborman, who attempted to intervene.

According to eyewitnesses, the tragedy unfolded at around 8:00 p.m. when Begumisa, who had been resting in a bedroom, complained of noise coming from a nearby salon. Moments later, cries were heard from young Ayebare, prompting neighbors and relatives to rush to the scene. They reportedly found Begumisa attacking the child with a sharp weapon.

When residents attempted to apprehend him, Begumisa allegedly locked himself inside the house and threatened to kill anyone who tried to arrest him, using a power saw. His brother Laborman entered to calm him down but was instead attacked and cut with a panga.
