KISORO: Traders in Kisoro Municipality are urgently calling for the installation of street lights along all major roads to enhance safety and security.
Currently, the Municipality, which comprises three divisions, has street lights only along the stretch from Kisoro Municipal Council to Mubano Hotel in Central Division. However, both Southern and Northern Divisions are devoid of any illumination, leaving these areas vulnerable to criminal activities after dusk.
The absence of street lights has forced many traders to shutter their shops prematurely, fearing potential attacks by robbers under the cover of darkness.
Expressing their frustration, traders question why the bustling Central Business District remains unlit despite its high foot traffic. They criticize municipal authorities for their silence on the matter, asserting that the lack of adequate lighting is adversely impacting their livelihoods.
“We cannot continue operating under these unsafe conditions. Without proper lighting, our businesses suffer, and our safety is compromised,” remarked one concerned trader. “The authorities need to prioritize our security and install street lights immediately. We cannot afford to wait any longer,” urged another.

In response to the traders’ demands, Ayubu Kisubi, the Kisoro Municipality Town Clerk, acknowledged plans to install street lights and expand coverage beyond the Central Business District. However, he refrained from specifying a timeline for implementation.
“We are aware of the pressing need for street lighting across the Municipality. Rest assured, plans are underway to address this issue comprehensively,” assured Kisubi.
