KABALE: Officials from UMEME have announced that the power outage in Kabale district will not be resolved until December, despite planned demonstrations by residents.
The officials made this statement on Tuesday during a UMEME stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at Cephas Inn Hotel in Makanga, Kabale Municipality, ahead of the anticipated “March to UMEME Office Kabale” protest scheduled for August 9th. The protest is in response to ongoing power outages in the district.
Business owners have repeatedly highlighted that nighttime power interruptions are causing insecurity, financial losses, accidents, and disruptions to online lectures and water supply in Kabale Municipality.
They expressed frustration that while Uganda supplies electricity to Rwanda, the situation in Kabale remains critical.
During the engagement, Ian Namanya, the UMEME Regional Operations manager Branch Manager for Western Uganda informed stakeholders that the power issue cannot be resolved until December when the Kabale substation being built at Karukara in Hamurwa Town Council, Rubanda District, is completed.
He assured that the problem would be permanently fixed once the substation is operational and urged residents to remain patient until then.
