Seventy-nine personnel from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) in Somalia, have successfully completed an intensive Battlefield Emergency First Aid (BEFA) training program.
The course, conducted by the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) in partnership with the United Nations Support Office, was aimed at enhancing the troops’ capacity to deliver swift and effective medical care in combat situations.
Participants received training in a wide array of critical lifesaving skills, including basic life support, wound and trauma management, control of severe bleeding, infection response, systematic casualty assessment, and hypothermia treatment.
The hands-on, practical approach of the training emphasized the crucial importance of immediate medical intervention in reducing fatalities and limiting the severity of injuries on the battlefield.
This initiative underscores the UPDF-UNGU’s continued commitment to operational readiness and highlights its vital role in supporting international peacekeeping efforts in Somalia.
