The Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC), Niwamanya Ben Kashumbusha, has issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters against engaging in political violence, following a violent clash between rival camps in Karuhuri Trading Centre.

The incident occurred on Monday during joint campaign activities for the Bufumbira South parliamentary seat involving incumbent MP Hon. Alex Niyonsaba Seruganda and challenger Hon. Sam Kwizera Bitangaro. Both candidates had earlier held rallies at Chahi Headquarters before their convoys converged at Karuhuri, where a disagreement over right of way quickly escalated.

Eyewitnesses say tensions flared when the two groups failed to coordinate passage through the narrow road, sparking a chaotic confrontation. Supporters from both sides clashed violently, leaving several people injured. Some victims were rushed to nearby health facilities, though the exact number and extent of injuries remain unclear.

Security forces, including the Uganda Police Force and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), intervened swiftly, firing warning shots to disperse the crowds and restore calm. The incident forced both candidates to abandon their rallies and leave the area separately.

Speaking to our Reporter, DPC Kashumbusha condemned the violence and warned that anyone found inciting or participating in such acts will face legal consequences. He urged political actors to conduct peaceful campaigns and advised the public to avoid being drawn into partisan conflicts.
