48 Inmates in Kabale, Kasese and Mbarara Sit for PLE

NEWS: At least 48 inmates are among the candidates sitting for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in the districts of Kabale, Kasese, and Mbarara.

In Kabale District, six candidates are from Ndorwa Government Prison. In Kasese District, five are from Mubuku Government Prison in Mubuku Town Council and in Mbarara District, 37 are taking the exams. The Kasese candidates are sitting for the exams at Mubuku Primary School.

The Kasese inmates include Aaron Munezero from Kisoro District, serving a 10-year sentence for defilement, Nelson Mbale from Kasika Village in Rukoki Sub-County, serving a 16-month sentence for land trespass and William Mukengeya from Kilembe Sub-County, serving a six-year sentence for robbery.

Others are Michael Okello from Karamoja, who is serving an 11-year sentence for illegal firearm possession, and Ramon Abemigisha from Rukiga District, serving an 18-year sentence for murder.

The inmates expressed their gratitude to the Government of Uganda for enabling them to continue their education while in prison. Kasese District Education Officer, Ernest Thabugha, reported that the exams commenced peacefully without interruptions.

In Mbarara, 37 inmates are sitting for the PLE exams, with 30 convicts and seven on remand. Winnie Musanyana, head teacher at Mbarara Main Prison Primary School, noted that the candidates include seven from Kakiika Prison, four from Nyamushekyera Government Prison, and 26 from Mbarara Main Prison.

In Kabale, Kabale Municipal Inspector of Schools, Gloria Asiimwe, stated that the six inmates from Ndorwa Prison are part of the 1,832 candidates sitting for exams across 28 centers representing 45 primary schools in Kabale Municipality. These six inmates are sitting for the exams at Kikungiri Primary School Center in Southern Division.
