Bishop Asili Memorial Nursery and Primary School was on Wednesday recognized as the overall winner of the Primary Schools Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) competitions held during the World Environment Day celebrations in Kabale District.
The school was honored by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was represented by the State Minister for Trade, Hon. David Bahati Kwesiga. This year’s celebration was held under the global theme “United Against Plastics,” emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to tackle plastic pollution, especially from plastic bags and bottles.

During the event, pupils from Bishop Asili Memorial Nursery and Primary School delivered a captivating performance that featured a powerful poem and a folk song calling for action against plastic pollution. Their presentation highlighted the need for Ugandans to “think twice and think right” to help end plastic waste.
The pupils’ message strongly aligned with President Museveni’s call on Ugandans, manufacturers, and stakeholders to harness the country’s abundant natural resources to create alternative, eco-friendly packaging materials as a solution to the worsening plastic pollution crisis.

In his message, President Museveni noted that one metric tonne of polythene can produce about 450,000 plastic shopping bags. He further revealed that Uganda generates an estimated 7,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, roughly equivalent to three billion plastic bags, placing enormous pressure on the country’s ecosystems.
Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, applauded the school for using performing arts to communicate environmental messages while promoting holistic child development.

“Music, dance, and drama are vital in nurturing creativity, emotional expression, and social skills. They also enhance cognitive abilities, cultural awareness, and academic performance. Engaging in the performing arts builds confidence and promotes teamwork,” Hon. Atwakiire remarked.
She also praised the school’s leadership for their dedication to developing purposeful children.

“Allow me to thank the head teacher who is here with us. Thank you for training such purposeful children. Your efforts truly deserve recognition,” she added.
The school’s Headmistress, Sister Margaret Tusiime, expressed gratitude for the recognition, attributing the victory to the school’s commitment to both academic and artistic excellence.

She also thanked the government and the Ministry of Education for their continued support in nurturing young talent.
