Tensions flared in Rubanda District as Rubanda East parliamentary aspirant Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema clashed with Hamurwa Sub-county LCIII Chairperson, Athanasius Nyarare, over what he termed as the poor state of the Nyakanengo stretch along the Murutenga–Nyamasizi–Kerere road, commonly known as Kanyeihamba Road.

The 14.4-kilometer road, which branches off the Kabale–Kisoro highway, serves as a vital link between the region and the Hamurwa–Kanungu–Kihihi–Ishasha road. It also acts as an alternative route when the Hamurwa stretch is flooded.

The disagreement unfolded on Wednesday during the burial of Byaruhanga Lazarus in Kyogo Village, Mpungu Parish, Hamurwa Sub-county. While addressing mourners, Nyarare announced that the Minister of Finance (General Duties) Hon. Henry Musasizi had contributed Shs 2.5 million to rehabilitate the flood-prone section by opening drainage gullies.

Nyarare also noted that the government had allocated Shs 100 million in the 2025/2026 financial year to permanently fix the road.

However, when handed the microphone, Biryabarema accused Nyarare and the district leadership of neglecting the road for the past four years. He claimed that it was only after he raised the issue on local radio that any action was taken.

Biryabarema, a former LC5 Chairperson, asserted that during his tenure, he consistently engaged the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to ensure the road was maintained, adding that road users never experienced such prolonged challenges under his leadership.
