As the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) draw closer, education stakeholders are calling for renewed focus on discipline, gratitude, and learner safety, concerns that stood out during Bishop Asili Memorial Nursery and Primary School’s dedication Mass held on Saturday in Kirigime, Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.

The event, which brought together parents, learners, and local leaders, was marked by a blend of spiritual reflection and critical dialogue on issues affecting education, especially the moral and physical wellbeing of learners.

Rev. Fr. Placid Mugumya, Secretary to the Bishop of Kabale Diocese, who led the Holy Mass, urged both candidates and parents to cultivate gratitude for the uninterrupted education provided at the institution.

He noted that while a recent teachers’ strike disrupted learning in many government schools, Bishop Asili pupils continued studying without interruption, a reminder, he said, of the importance of stability in education.

“The school environment plays a key role in shaping children’s success. Gratitude and focus must go hand in hand if we are to nurture responsible citizens,” Fr. Mugumya said.

The school’s headteacher, Rev. Sr. Magret Tusiime, highlighted that steady collaboration between parents and management has enabled major developments, including new staff accommodation and land for co-curricular activities, showing how community involvement strengthens educational outcomes.

However, beyond academic preparations, the ceremony also exposed growing concerns over learner safety and moral decline in the wider Kabale community.

Maj. Godfrey Katamba, Kabale District Resident District Commissioner (RDC), commended the school for its moral foundation but warned about the increasing threat of drug abuse and violent youth behavior within Kabale Municipality.

“Drug use and gangs are becoming a real danger to our children. We must act collectively to protect schools as safe learning spaces,” he cautioned.

His remarks followed a security concern raised by staff member and aspiring LCV Chairperson, George Nsaba, who reported the presence of panga-wielding goons around the school. Maj. Katamba assured that security agencies were on high alert and that some suspects had already been apprehended.

Isaih Kanyamahane, Vice Chairperson of the Board of Governors and RDC of Kitagwenda District, urged candidates to approach their final exams with discipline and positivity, reminding parents that education must go beyond academics to nurture character.

For years, Bishop Asili Memorial Nursery Primary School has distinguished itself through academic excellence and holistic education. Yet, this year’s dedication Mass served as a reminder that the challenges of moral erosion, drug abuse, and insecurity continue to test the progress made by institutions striving to mold disciplined, God-fearing citizens.
