KABALE – Kabale District Local Government on Thursday handed over essential items to the headteachers of schools that have benefited from the Uganda Multisectoral Food Security and Nutrition Project, marking the conclusion of the project in the district.

Commencing in the 2016/17 financial year, the district initiated the project, initially covering 100 primary schools, 61 in Kabale and 39 in the now-separate Rukiga district. Each school received valuable resources, including two wash tanks, one dust bin, and a stainless-steel tank for drinking water, collectively valued at millions of shillings.

The Multisectoral project, integrating Health, Education, and Agriculture, aimed to enhance the production and consumption of micronutrient-rich foods, promoting the utilization of community-based nutrition services in smallholder households within the project areas.

Key areas of focus for achieving the project’s objectives involved delivering multisectoral nutrition services at the community level, demonstrating and adopting agricultural best practices, and utilizing community-based health and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in beneficiary schools.

Jennifer Twebaze, the Senior Fisheries Officer for Kabale District and the project focal person, emphasized during the handover that the items, procured under the WASH component, were meant to enhance sanitation and hygiene in beneficiary schools. She urged school heads to ensure the sustainability of the project despite the closure of its funding.
