KABALE – Authorities at National Teachers College in Kabale district are hunting 3,710,756,000 Billion to rehabilitate the dilapidated seven halls of residence, including the “Kaguta” hall constructed in 1984, all of which are burdened with condemned asbestos rooftops.
According to the College Principal, Annet Komunda, the halls of residence have leaking roofs and falling walls which jeopardize the safety of the students. She says due to this, a significant number of students have opted to rent outside the college premises in fear of the health hazard posed by the asbestos roofs still present in the student accommodation which affects their learning experience.
To rectify these issues, she says that the college is seeking 3,710,756,000 Billion for the renovation of all halls, with an average allocation of 600 Million per hall. She calls for support from the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Health, and other development partners to address this pressing challenge.

Despite a parliamentary order in 2013 to phase out asbestos sheets in educational institutions, National Teachers College in Kabale has not seen any changes. The spokesperson for Ministry of Health, Emmanuel Ainebyoona advises students and management at the college to be cautious enough and avoid drinking water that is collected from the roofs and ensure that they are not encroached by particles from the roofs for safety.
