Mwisi Primary School in Kabale District has earned national recognition after emerging as Second Runner-Up at the 3rd National Environment Sustainability Awards organized by the National Environment Management Authority (National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)), cementing its reputation as one of the leading schools in environmental innovation.
The school was honoured under the Circular Economy Innovation Awards category in recognition of its outstanding environmental conservation efforts, innovative waste management practices, and strong commitment to promoting sustainable development within and beyond the school community.
The awards ceremony took place on Thursday evening at the Serena Hotel Kampala, under the theme “Innovation for Climate Resilience.” The annual event is designed to celebrate individuals, institutions, and organizations that demonstrate excellence in environmental management and sustainability, while encouraging the replication of successful green initiatives across the country.
According to NEMA, the awards aim to inspire wider adoption of innovative environmental solutions as Uganda intensifies efforts to combat climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation.
Mwisi Primary School’s achievement highlights the growing role of learning institutions in advancing environmental stewardship, with schools increasingly becoming key drivers of climate awareness, practical innovation, and community engagement in sustainability.
The award was received on behalf of the school by Head Teacher Adrine Nyongyera, who was accompanied by the school’s Environment Club patron, Bernard Byagagare Kajumba, during the colourful ceremony in Kampala.
