KATAKWI: A primary school teacher at Akuoro Primary School in Usuk and a resident of Oilotor Village, Akoboi Sub County, Katakwi District, Peter Onyait is appealing for assistance to pay off medical bills amounting to UGX 1,200,000 following a tragic motorcycle accident on October 6, 2024.
Onyait was on his way to his duty station when the accident occurred, leaving him with serious injuries to both legs.
Onyait revealed that he currently owes Ebenezer Medical Clinic in Katakwi UGX 1 million for his treatment and is facing mounting pressure to repay the money he borrowed to cover the costs.
“I borrowed UGX 1,200,000 from friends and money lenders to pay for my treatment, and now the debt is overwhelming,” Onyait explained.
A national English examiner, Onyait expressed concern over his financial strain, which has deeply affected his family. His children have been forced to drop out of school due to unpaid fees, leaving them vulnerable.
In his appeal, Onyait called upon well-wishers, including Kazi Ni Kazi Founder Daniel Mulalu and Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Alupo, to help him settle his medical debts and support his children’s education. He also stressed the importance of returning to his school in time to guide his Primary Seven candidates for their upcoming exams.
Speaking to our reporter, Onyait shared his story at his home, where he is still recovering from the injuries sustained in the accident.
Pius Oler, a teacher at Township Primary School, expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents involving teachers, which he attributes to the lack of staff accommodation at schools. Oler noted that several teachers from Orimai Primary School have been involved in road accidents.
“At Orimai Primary School, out of five teachers, three have been affected by road accidents,” he said, highlighting the challenges faced by teachers who commute long distances to work.
In response to the situation, Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo acknowledged the plight of the affected teachers.
“As a district, we have many teachers facing various challenges. We are exploring ways to offer support where possible,” Omolo said, noting the need for better monitoring and assistance for teachers across the district.
