Police has urged parents, school authorities, and financial institutions to prioritize the safety and security of learners as schools reopen for the first term this week.

In a statement, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kituuma Rusoke of the Uganda Police Force emphasized the importance of proactive measures to protect children, particularly lower primary pupils and girls.

Parents and guardians were advised to escort children to and from school whenever possible, avoid sending them alone very early in the morning or late in the evening, and ensure they use main routes while walking in groups. Children should also keep to the side facing oncoming traffic and use designated crossings where available.

ACP Rusoke also urged parents to monitor school bags for prohibited items such as drugs, alcohol, gadgets, or weapons, and to provide school authorities with relevant medical information for children with chronic conditions.

Safety inspections of school premises, including buildings, latrines, electrical wiring, and fire safety equipment, were encouraged to prevent accidents. Schools are also advised to periodically inspect learners’ belongings for dangerous or illegal items.

Financial institutions were urged to promote digital payments for school fees to reduce cash handling risks and congestion in banking halls.

Banks are advised to work with schools to support safe online payment channels, sensitize parents on phishing and scam messages, and increase security around their premises, particularly during peak school-fee periods.
