Political competition is intensifying in Kabale District as Kahungye Sub County LC5 Councilor Champion Baker Turyamureba steps up his bid for the district council speakership, setting the stage for a tight leadership race ahead of the May polls.

Turyamureba, who has secured another five-year mandate (2026–2031), is seeking to unseat the incumbent Speaker, Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagizi. He currently serves as a district councilor (2021–2026) and has built a reputation as an active legislator focused on development-driven governance across Kabale District and the broader Kigezi sub-region.

During his previous term, Turyamureba served as Chairperson of the Production and Marketing, Natural Resources, Commercial Services, Trade, and Local Development Standing Committee.

In this role, he was influential in shaping policy discussions aimed at improving household livelihoods, expanding local trade opportunities, and promoting sustainable management of natural resources.

Turyamureba’s leadership credentials date back to his academic years. He attended Rubaya Primary School, where he served as Head Boy, before joining Rubaya Secondary School for both O-Level and A-Level education, where he also held student leadership positions, including Assistant Head Boy and later Head Boy.

He later pursued higher education at Kabale University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science with Education. He further advanced his studies at Kyambogo University, earning a Master’s degree in Geography.

Campaigning under the slogan “Consensus Builder,” Turyamureba says his leadership vision is anchored on unity, dialogue, and inclusive decision-making within the district council. He argues that consensus-driven governance will help fast-track development priorities and reduce political divisions.

His decision to challenge the incumbent Speaker has injected fresh political energy into the council leadership race, as council members prepare to determine who will steer the district’s legislative agenda in the coming term.

The race for the speakership is expected to attract significant attention, with political observers saying the contest will test the balance between continuity and change in Kabale District’s local government leadership.
