RUKIGA: Leaders in Muhanga town council in Rukiga district are requesting the district authorities to prioritize the establishment of a mortuary at Bukinda Health Center III in the financial year 2023/2024, in order to reduce the burden of transporting dead bodies to Kabale Regional Referral hospital mortuary.
The Muhanga town clerk Eudia Mutabazi said that the town council being the fastest developing town in Rukiga district, they have always registered several deaths of non residents whose bodies are always taken to Kabale Regional Referral hospital mortuary.
Mutabazi added that recently mortuary attendants at the mortuary denied the body and they were forced to take it back and buried it in their town council mortuary in Butobere cell, Butare ward, Muhanga.
The LC3 Chairperson of Muhanga town Council James Twijukye says that during Covid-19 lockdown they buried the unclaimed body in the cemetery that had died in an accident but relatives later came to claim the body which forced them to exhume it which was stressful.
Twijukye says that once the mortuary is constructed at Bukinda H/C III in Muhanga T/C, this will be easier for them.
The Rukiga District Chief Administrative Officer John Asiimwe says the district will work with the town council leadership to ensure that the mortuary is established in the town council, in the financial year 2023/2024, which will help to serve other neighboring areas.
