KISORO – The Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament in Kisoro District, Hon. Eddie Kwizera Wagahugu, has made a resolute commitment to throw his full support behind the visionary ambitions of Iryaruvumba Archdeaconry to transform the Iryaruvumba eye clinic into a fully functional hospital.
Nestled within the heart of Rubuguri town council, the Iryaruvumba eye clinic initiative was conceived by Isaiah Tumwesigye back in 2013. It was subsequently embraced by the church and commenced its Construction in 2014.
During a phone interview with Our Reporter, Hon. Kwizera expressed his conviction that this specialized clinic, designed to address visual impairments and provide antenatal services, would be an invaluable asset to the local community due to its convenient proximity.
Hon. Kwizera lauded the remarkable efforts of the Muhabura diocese in rallying community support for this transformative project. The initial estimated budget for the clinic’s construction amounted to 300 million shillings, a goal that encountered setbacks but was not abandoned.
With unwavering determination, Hon. Gahugu, as the area elected representative, has pledged to use every available resource and connection to ensure the diocese realizes its aspirations. He also acknowledged the clinic’s potential for future expansion, including the construction of staff accommodations. Notably, the clinic will offer specialized services to address health issues commonly associated with insect-borne diseases prevalent in the region, often transmitted by gorillas.
Hon. Eddie Kwizera Waguhugu himself mobilized substantial contributions, amassing over 51 million shillings equivalent to 58% of the total funds collected on that occasion.

The Chairman Construction Committee, Tumuheirwe John, extended his commendation to Hon. Kwizera for his extraordinary lobbying efforts, which led to a more substantial financial contribution than initially anticipated from the fundraising event. According to Tumeheirwe, the eye clinic holds the promise of curbing eye-related diseases that have plagued Bukimbiri County, exacerbated by its proximity to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park a hotbed for black flies responsible for transmitting these ailments.

Rev. Steven Butera, the Archdeacon of Iryaruvumba Archdeaconry, noted that while the project’s inception centered on the eye clinic, its scope will expand to encompass antenatal and general healthcare services, with aspirations of achieving Health Center IV status.
Rev. Butera highlighted the archdeaconry’s steadfast commitment to advancing the region’s development through diverse initiatives, including livestock farming, savings groups, ministry work, and bolstering healthcare infrastructure.
He revealed that the eye clinic is poised to alleviate the financial burden on the community, as it curtails the need for extensive travel to access medical care. Additionally, it’s anticipated to generate employment opportunities, thus contributing to increased government revenues.
