Residents of Habuhutu Town Council in Rubanda District have been asked to embrace and protect a new government water project expected to improve access to safe water and transform livelihoods.
Rubanda District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Samuel Ahabwe said the investment will play a critical role in improving public health, reducing sanitation-related challenges and enhancing economic productivity among households.
During an inspection of the project on Tuesday, Ahabwe noted that access to clean water will ease the burden on families, especially women and children who often spend significant time searching for water.
He said the project should be viewed as a foundation for wider community development rather than just an infrastructure project.
“It is about improving health, sanitation, education and productivity. When families have clean water, the burden of disease reduces and women and children gain time for other activities,” Ahabwe said.
The CAO called on residents to take responsibility for safeguarding the water facilities, warning that vandalism and illegal connections could undermine the benefits of the government investment.
He appreciated community members who provided land for the water source and pipeline construction, describing their contribution as a demonstration of partnership between government and citizens.
Ahabwe also commended the Project Management Committee, contractor and technical teams for their efforts in ensuring the project progresses as planned.
The project aligns with government’s broader agenda of expanding access to safe water as a key driver of socio-economic transformation under the Fourth National Development Plan.
He urged local leaders and residents to work together to ensure the facility is completed, maintained and continues serving the people of Habuhutu for years to come.
