Authorities in Kasese District have launched the distribution of 518,550 mosquito nets aimed at preventing malaria among communities.
The exercise is part of a nationwide campaign by the Ministry of Health, implemented through National Medical Stores, to reduce malaria cases across the country.
Speaking during the launch on Sunday, the Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, commended the government for its continued commitment to combating malaria and improving public health.
He urged health officials to intensify community sensitization, noting that some residents misuse mosquito nets instead of using them for protection against mosquito bites.
He also warned distribution teams to avoid irregularities, especially in sensitive border areas such as Mpondwe-Lhubiriha, emphasizing transparency and accountability throughout the exercise.

District Health Officer Dr. Amon Bwambale explained that the mosquito nets have been delivered to parishes and will be temporarily stored as Village Health Teams (VHTs) are trained on proper distribution procedures.
He added that allocation will be based on household size, with one net provided for every two people, and encouraged residents to embrace the program.

Meanwhile, District Vice Chairperson Monday Girivazio expressed gratitude for the initiative and urged residents to use the nets for their intended purpose. He cautioned against misuse, such as using them for poultry shelters or seedbeds, which undermines efforts to fight malaria.
He further called on local leaders to mobilize communities effectively to ensure that no household is left out of the distribution exercise.
