Kazo District Local Government has commissioned a new medicine store at Kazo Health Centre IV, a development expected to improve the storage and management of medicines and other medical supplies at the facility.
The store, constructed by Aswangah Construction Services Limited under a contract from the Ministry of Health, was funded by the Global Fund at a cost of more than Shs700 million.
The approximately 300-square-metre facility provides expanded storage capacity for medicines and other health supplies, addressing a long-standing challenge at the health centre.
Speaking during the commissioning on Wednesday, Kazo District Health Officer Dr Edgar Kansiime commended the district leadership for its support towards improving health services.
He also thanked the Ministry of Health, through Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine, for supporting the district’s health infrastructure.
Twinamatsiko David, an official from Aswangah Construction Services Limited, said the store was designed to accommodate large quantities of medicines and other medical supplies.
District Engineer Eng Coleb Ntwirenabo said although the Ministry of Health was responsible for the project, the district worked closely with the ministry to monitor its implementation.
He said the construction was completed to the required standards.
Kazo Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Badru Mayanja Majwala commended the government for investing in health infrastructure, saying the district was also working to strengthen Kazo Health Centre IV through recruitment and filling of vacant positions.
He said the facility now has more doctors and other health workers, with further recruitment expected to improve service delivery.
Kazo LC5 Chairperson Rev Samuel Mugisha Katugunda said the new store had addressed inadequate medicine storage at the health centre.
He added that the district was also constructing staff houses at the facility to improve accommodation for health workers.
Rev Katugunda urged health workers to make proper use of the improved infrastructure and provide quality services to residents.
The Resident District Commissioner, Capt Yahaya Kakooza, said he had monitored the construction and described the facility as one of the best medicine stores in the district.
He urged the facility management and other stakeholders to properly maintain the store and protect the government investment.
Capt Kakooza also called for stronger monitoring of government projects to ensure value for money.
Meanwhile, the district also commissioned external works at Kyampangara Health Centre III, Nkungu Health Centre III and Kyengando Health Centre III as part of efforts to improve health infrastructure and service delivery.
The projects are expected to strengthen health facilities and improve access to healthcare services for residents in Kazo District.
