KISORO- The Kisoro district LCV Chairman, Abel Bizimana has said that Kisoro district local government will not dissect its land to provide the municipality with enough cemetery space.
This follows comments from the Kisoro municipality Mayor, Ndyana Richard who earlier suggested that Kisoro district local government should give a portion of its land neighboring the municipal cemetery to provide enough burial spaces.
The municipal cemetery located in Gatovu cell in southern division ran out of burial space that has resulted into repeated half burials, exposure of dead peoples’ remains and foul smell in the area.
According to Bizimana, it is the duty of Kisoro municipal council to ensure that all unclaimed dead bodies, be it for humans or other animals, are buried.
He said that the district can share other things with the municipality but not land because the municipality has failed to maintain its lands.
He asked the municipality to establish a cemetery management team to ensure that professional burials are conducted in order to observe rights for the dead.
He also noted that UNHCR is likely to support the district in getting land for another cemetery site.
He also advised municipal authorities to solicit for funds and buy land for a cemetery the way they did to buy garbage land.
In an interview with our reporter, the Kisoro Municipality Mayor Ndyana Richard said that the cemetery is just located in the municipality but both the district and the municipality use it.
He implored to have more engagements with LCV chairman so that they harmonize on the way forward.
He called upon the district leadership to cooperate with the municipality because it is still a district’s baby.
