KISORO
Kisoro Municipality has recently sought to collaborate with BIN-IT Service Ltd, the leading private waste management company in the country, in an effort to bolster waste management practices within the municipality.
This announcement has been made by Kamba Haruna, the town clerk of Kisoro Municipal.
During an exclusive interview with our reporter, Haruna Kamba emphasized that Kisoro Municipality serves as a popular tourist destination and a bustling business center, situated on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Consequently, the municipality grapples with a significant volume of solid waste.
According to reports, Kisoro Municipality generates a staggering 6462 tons of garbage annually, with 2584 tons comprising non-biodegradable waste such as plastics and polyurethane. Regrettably, approximately 646 tons of this waste remain uncollected or are haphazardly disposed of.
Kamba highlighted the fact that the current method of plastic disposal is through open burning, which poses a serious threat to public health.
Optimistically, Haruna Kamba expressed his belief that Kisoro Municipality would greatly benefit from the technological expertise provided by BIN-IT Service Ltd to effectively address their solid waste management challenges.
He further explained that officials from BIN-IT Service Ltd are currently conducting a feasibility study before commencing their support for Kisoro Municipality, and this assistance will be provided at no cost.
Furthermore, Mr. Kamba mentioned that Kisoro Municipality has successfully installed eight solar street lights in the town. The contract for this project was awarded to Life Uganda Ltd for a sum of 67 million shillings. The street lights have been installed at Bugigi Place and along a route leading to Kisoro Hospital.
Tumwizere Michael, the LC4 councilor representing Nyagashinge ward, expressed his belief that the street lights would significantly reduce darkness in certain areas.
He also disclosed that the municipality has plans to install street lights in other parts of the town, based on the revenue collected. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to Kisoro Municipality for rehabilitating some of the feeder roads within the area.
Councilor Tumwizere Michael urged the residents of Nyagashinge ward to embrace a new community road that is set to open in the area. He emphasized that this road will connect Chahi, Nyagashinge, and Gishegera cells, thereby facilitating better transportation and connectivity within the region.
